The Dakota of the Great Plains believe sweetgrass was the first plant to cover Mother Earth. Historically, sweetgrass was used for cosmetic and aromatic purposes. Leaves were soaked in water and used as a hair wash. Sweetgrass is long believed by the Mdewakanton Dakota
to dispel negative energy and elicit emotional strength. It is a
purifying herb that is calming and relaxing. Sweetgrass was, and is,
very widely used by the Rain Clan. As a sacred plant, it is used in
blessings, peace and healing rituals. Leaves are dried and made into
braids and burned as vanilla-scented incense during ceremonies or
given as a gift of good will. It is used for purification, as
oblations to ancestors, for protection of spirits, and keeping out of
evil and harm. Click on a product image for more information.
